Mold can sometimes run rampant and take over an entire room or even an entire home. In situations like this, where you have a house or a room closed off without proper air flow for an extended amount of time, a little household cleaner will not do. There would need to be complete removal of wall, ceilings and other affected areas. 

Mold doesn't always mean a complete tear out job. Sometimes, like in this picture, it's contained to one small area. At times, when it is a small area, you can use a household cleaner that has a broad spectrum of bactericidal properties to clean the area yourself.

Here is a great example of what mold looks like when it is growing in your home.  Mold can appear anywhere.  The growth occurs where there is moisture that does not dry.  It is a good idea to have monthly check around your home where there could be possible water leakage issues, such as around the air conditioner, around the sinks, around the bathroom faucets, around the washing machine and around the toilet.  These are not the only places you should check, but keep an open mind and make sure you are paying attention to signs of mold and mildew in your home.
